The 47th Annual Foothill Swim Games and Previewing Pacific Coast League Finals: HSPN Sports Recaps Northwood’s Past Weekend and Possibilities at the Upcoming PCL Finals

Continuing our coverage of the 2019 Northwood High School swim team, they participated in the 47th Annual Foothill Swim Games. The finals of the games took place on Saturday, April 13, 2019 featuring 15 Southern California high schools who gave Northwood all they could handle at the Foothill High School Aquatic Center in Santa Ana, CA.

Northwood though handled the competition as they finished a combined 3rd place at the meet. The girls were able to finish in 4th place while the boys despite winning the last two Foothill Swim Games still had a great showing at the meet as they ended up in 2nd place behind league rival University High School. Overall, the swimmers for Northwood put on a great showing having top 16 finishes for each event.

In terms of an individual standout from the girls, Amanda Hsieh finished 2nd place in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:06.72 and also had a 4th place finish in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 51.78. While from the boys, they had multiple standouts throughout the entire meet featuring David Xue, Connor Budka, and Felix Zhu. Xue finished 3rd in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 1:57.33 in addition to having a 5th place finish in the 100 Butterfly at a time of 51.98. Now Budka had a strong performance in the 100 Breaststroke finishing in 2nd place with a time of 58.76. While Zhu had two 4th place finishes in the 100 Freestyle at 47.89 and in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:47.53.

While for the relay events, Northwood also had some great performances as well for both the boys and the girls. The girls for the 200 Freestyle Relay finished in 6th place with a time of 1:40.12. While the boys had great performances finishing in 4th place for all the relays (200 Medley Relay: 1:39.15, 200 Freestyle Relay: 1:27.83, 400 Freestyle Relay: 3:11.84).

Up next for the swim team are the Pacific Coast League Finals at the Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine, CA on April 26 at 2 PM. Both teams finished 2nd place in the regular season and are looking forward to finding a way to come out on top in the PCL Finals. The girls will be going for their first title while the boys are looking to make it four straight league titles. Buckle up as we have a lot on the line for this great program.
