Key West High School Baseball Opening Night

It was opening night for the Key West Conchs baseball team this past Friday night. The Conchs faced off against West Boca High School and crushed the Bulls 13-3 in only five innings of play.

hunter IMG_6292Hunter Mattheessen was on the mound for the Conchs and struck out his first three batters he faced. Mattheessen continued to dominant until the 3rd inning when he would give up two runs. Damon Taylor would get the nod to come in as relief as the Conchs led 4-2 in the top of 4th.

Taylor struck out his first batter before giving up one more run. Heading into the bottom of the fourth, the Conchs led 4-3. What baseball IMG_6257appeared to be a close game, quickly changed. After multiple hits and wild pitches, the Conchs had scored 6 runs and led 10-3. With the bases loaded, Kyle Snow was up to bat. Snow smacked the ball into right field and reached third base, nearly making an inside the park home run. The base clearing triple put the Conchs up 10 runs in the top of fifth, leading 13-3.

baseball 2 IMG_6252In high school baseball, if one team is up 10 by the end of the fifth inning, the game ends. In the top of fifth, Taylor would strike out two batters after giving up a hit. Closer Andrew Karch ended the game for Key West and the Conchs came out on top 13-3 in just five innings of play.

Key West was scheduled to play Doral Academy the following evening but the game was cancelled due to weather. The Conchs return to action on Friday night and again on Saturday against North Port in their first regular season game.
